What is PBIS?

What is PBIS?

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a broad range of systematic and individualized strategies for achieving important social and learning outcomes while preventing problem behavior. (OSEP Center on PBIS, 2010).

PBIS for Beginners

PBIS refers to a systems change process for an entire school or district. The underlying theme is teaching behavioral expectations in the same manner as any core curriculum subject. Please click here to open and download a quick summary of PBIS.

What is School-Wide Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports?

Improving student academic and behavior outcomes is about ensuring all students have access to the most effective and accurately implemented instructional and behavioral practices and interventions possible. School-Wide Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (SW PBIS) provides an operational framework for achieving these outcomes. More importantly, SW PBIS is NOT a curriculum, intervention, or practice, but IS a decision making framework that guides selection, integration, and implementation of the best evidence-based academic and behavioral practices for improving important academic and behavior outcomes for all students.

Purpose

Developing a positive school environment helps teachers teach and students learn. The state also developed social and emotional learning standards that all schools must follow. PBIS meets the criteria for delivering these standards to students.

PBIS's Relationship to Other Behavioral Interventions & Supports

School-wide positive behavior support is not considered a new initiative. Instead it is a set of problem-solving strategies and processes that can be used to build upon a school’s existing strengths. PBIS uses data to analyze behavior and target problem areas.

PBIS is a research-based systems approach designed to enhance the capacity of schools to effectively educate all students, including those students with challenging social behaviors. Efforts are made to prevent troubling behavior from occurring in the first place, rather than reacting after there is a problem.
